Measurement Technology
Welcome to the course Fundamentals of Measurement Technology. This course is offered in the BMT degree programme in the 2nd semester and in the ETR degree programme in the 7th semester as an elective.
If you want to know how warm it is outside, you look at a thermometer. If you have done everything right in your life, it shows about 27 °C. A digital thermometer shows a numerical value with a unit on a display. In this tutorial, you will learn how a thermometer converts the physical quantity “temperature” into such a numerical value.
You will measure many quantities in your professional life. In the BMT degree programme, you measure on the body, among other things, pressure (blood pressure), temperature, flow velocities, substance concentrations etc. In the ETR degree programme, you measure pressure, temperature, power, voltages and currents in industrial plants. These are all physical, electrical, chemical or biological quantities. On the way from the measured quantity to the displayed number, we need electrical engineering.
That is why this tutorial assumes the content of “Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering”. It is very helpful if you have also understood the content and can apply it. If you have not passed the electrical engineering exam, I recommend that you learn electrical engineering first and only then start with measurement technology. Without electrical engineering, you will probably not pass the measurement technology exam either.
Once you have understood how measuring instruments work internally, you can develop measuring instruments from sensors yourself. You learn how to develop biosensors in your BMT degree programme. Here you will learn how to process the output signals of sensors so that numbers are created that are readable by people and machines and that you can then interpret.
